I don't know why you couldn't find a set of 5.12s from earlier model 1st gen trucks and install the 5.12 gears into the front diff of the 2nd gen, though. All the other Chevy Tracker models came with either the 4.62 or the 4.88 gears. I agree with Whitfield, I think the only 2nd gen Tracker you will find the 5.12 gear sets in is on a '99 model 2-door with the 1.6 Liter engine from the factory. The 1512LR does NOT come with the new side drivers, you simply use your stock driver gears. I run a set of 29" tires and the speedo is corrected with the 4.88s.Īs far as lockers, I installed a Richmond Gear's Lock Right (stock number 1512LR) in the rear of my truck (with the 4.88 gears) and have had NO problems with it. Both front diffs were aluminum construction. I swapped them for a set of 4.88s from an auto tranny equipped truck. I have an '02 5 speed with a 2 liter engine that came with 4.62 gears stock. I believe you will find the front diffs on the 2nd Gen Chevy Trackers are all aluminum from the factory.
